Living Vicariously

The day finally came for Roy's first basketball game. I have been anticipating this moment since Bill and I got married. I wanted to influence Roy to have a love for basketball. Since I am no longer involved in the game, my heart bleeds for basketball. I have so many thoughts on the game and I can't help but want to influence kids to find a love for the game the way I did and still do. Roy started showing a MAJOR interest in bball a few months ago. He kept asking to go in the backyard and play horse. Over spring break, we decided to move the goal to the front and we have never looked back. He and the neighborhood kids are there almost everyday.

His second favorite love is his friend Sean. We met his mother and she talked about a team that Sean was going to play on. I quickly went to the website and signed Roy up and placed him on Sean's team. It was a WIN WIN situation.

So we went out Saturday before his game and bought him some new sneakers. He has also found a love for my childhood idol Micheal Jordan. Now I recently quit liking Jordan because of his marriage problems and also for the speech he gave at the Hall of Fame ceremony. I thought he had a lot of anger. He always spoke well in interviews and I felt like he was a good man off the court too. I have since changed my opinion of him but nevertheless Roy is into him. His first pair of sneakers, Jordans!

So we headed to the gym and the game began. Roy played extremely well. He is well ahead of the other kids which I would like to think has to do with his efforts out in the front. I also would like to think Coach Summer had effects too. :) I was also concerned that at times Roy can be a ball hog and a little show boat. He was neither. He seemed to find a balance in it all.

Their team won 20-16. Roy made three lay-ups and two shots from the outside. He played great defense and stole the ball a few times which led to his lay-ups. He even blocked a shot. I screamed the whole game. I felt invigorated. I am back in the atmosphere where I feel most comfortable even if it is now as a supportive parent. He is #3 playing defence at the top of the picture.
He is the point guard. Hmmm... who else played that role.
Finally, Grammie, Poppy, Uncle Bryan, Aunt Ashley, Jillian and Rocco made an appearance. There wasn't too many games that my parents ever missed. For whatever reason basketball just runs in our blood.
Even Rocco got in on the action. He kept trying to run out on the court to steal the ball. I am already working on him too.
